Position Overview
ActionAid International (AAI) is seeking two motivated Finance Interns to join its Finance team within the Global Secretariat hubs in Johannesburg and Nairobi. This internship is structured as a professional learning and development opportunity, offering practical exposure, mentorship, and hands-on experience in a global federation environment.
The successful candidates will support the organisation’s finance function across departments, contributing to financial reporting, accounting operations, reconciliations, budgeting, compliance, and audit preparation. The role provides exposure to multi-country finance operations and cross-functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
GS Payments Support and Ledger Maintenance

Assist in processing multi-country payments, ensuring compliance with organisational policies and procedures.

Support payroll-related payments and accurate ledger postings.

Process and post recharge transactions across countries.

Capture and maintain financial data within finance systems.

Support month-end and year-end financial close processes.
Audit Support
-
Prepare audit files, schedules, and supporting documentation.

Provide support during internal and external audits.

Assist in responding to audit queries and clearing outstanding issues.

Track management letter action points and monitor follow-up progress.

Support GS Hub audit planning and deliverables.
Credit Card Management and Recharges Support

Assist in processing and reconciling credit card expenses.

Follow up with cardholders to ensure appropriate approvals and accountability.

Support monthly reconciliation of recharge transactions.
-
Process transactions received through the Finance recharge mailbox.
Reconciliations

Assist with timely balance sheet reconciliations.

Support the clearance of outstanding reconciliation items.
Budgeting and Forecasting Support

Collect departmental data for budget preparation.

Update budget templates and forecasting tools.
-
Analyse expenditure trends and investigate variances.

Support preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports.

Assist in preparing budget presentations.
Additional Responsibilities

Support federation planning and reporting data consolidation.

Assist with project accounting tasks.

Respond to finance-related queries from budget holders.

Support reconciliation and processing of staff debtor transactions.

Perform other duties as assigned by the line manager.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a recent graduate with a degree in Finance or Accounting and a foundational understanding of accounting principles. Knowledge of IFRS or local GAAP will be an added advantage.
Applicants should demonstrate exposure to financial or administrative work through academic coursework, volunteering, internships, or part-time employment. Completion of a work readiness programme is desirable.
Candidates should possess knowledge of key financial processes, including bookkeeping, reconciliations, budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, audit processes, payroll, procurement, and risk management.
Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential. Applicants must demonstrate attention to detail, organisational skills, and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required. Experience with accounting systems, Power BI, or AI tools will be considered an advantage.
