The M-Pesa Virtual Card lets you shop online using your M-Pesa balance. It works like a regular Visa card — but it lives on your phone. No plastic. No bank visit. And it takes about two minutes to set up.
What exactly is it?
It’s a 16-digit Visa prepaid card number linked directly to your M-Pesa wallet. You get a card number, expiry date, and CVV — the same three things any online store asks for when you check out. The money comes straight from your M-Pesa balance when you pay.
How to get and use it
Activate through M-Pesa app or USSD
Open the M-Pesa app on your phone and go to Cards → Virtual Card → Activate. Or dial the USSD code below if you prefer the quick-dial route.
Select: My Account
Select: M-Pesa Card
Select: Virtual Card
Select: Activate
Get your card details
Once activated, the app shows your card number, expiry date, and CVV. Write these down or screenshot them. You’ll need all three when paying online.
Card No: 4752 XXXX XXXX XXXX
Expiry: 03/28
CVV: XXX
Keep your CVV private at all times.
Load money onto the card
Go to Cards → Virtual Card → Load Card in the app. Enter how much you want to move from your M-Pesa wallet to the card. Only load what you plan to spend — it’s safer that way.
Use it at checkout
When shopping online, select “Debit/Credit Card” or “Visa” as your payment method. Enter your 16-digit card number, expiry date, and CVV. That’s it.

Confirm the M-Pesa prompt

⚠️ Good to know before you pay
Load only what you need. Don’t keep large amounts on the card. Load money right before a purchase and only as much as you plan to spend.
Keep your CVV private. Treat it like your M-Pesa PIN. Never share it over the phone or on suspicious sites.
Some sites don’t accept prepaid cards. A few platforms (like PayPal funding source) may decline prepaid Visa cards. Check the site’s accepted payment methods first.
Check the exchange rate for USD payments. International purchases are converted from USD to KES. Safaricom applies their own rate, so it’s worth noting the final charge.
Freeze or delete the card anytime. Through the M-Pesa app, you can freeze your virtual card instantly if you suspect any unauthorized use.
