ABOUT LEARNING FOR LIFE (L4L)
The Learning for Life (L4L): Building a Resilient and Responsive Health Workforce in Africa programme, sits within the Institute of Capacity Development (ICD) and is a 4-year programme in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, which is being implemented in Kenya, Senegal and Zambia during this first phase. The programme focuses on creating sustainable job opportunities, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, and building leadership capacity in the health sector. The Learning for Life Programme focuses on three key pillars of work: Health Employment, Health Entrepreneurship, and Health Ecosystem. This comprehensive approach aims to improve training infrastructure, increase employment and income-generating opportunities, enhance regulatory frameworks for primary healthcare workers, and equip future leaders with the skills needed to transform healthcare delivery across Africa.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Research Analyst will play a pivotal role in shaping and informing the programme’s strategic direction. A critical thinker with strong analytical skills, the Research Analyst will apply a systems-thinking approach to assess and interpret data across the health entrepreneurship landscape. This role involves ongoing analysis to position health as a viable economic sector capable of generating sustainable job opportunities. This Analyst will continuously monitor trends, policy developments, funding opportunities, and private-sector engagements, and assess innovative models to integrate young healthcare workers into entrepreneurship and innovation value chains.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and Analysis
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative research (desk reviews, interviews, field visits).to inform strategic interventions within health innovation, entrepreneurship and employment.
- Perform market, policy, or ecosystem analysis to understand health innovation and entrepreneurship challenges and opportunities.
- Synthesize complex market intelligence, economic data, and contextual insights to guide programmatic decisions.
- Analyze datasets using Excel, Python, or other analytical tools.
- Synthesize insights from reports, stakeholder interviews, and field data. Example: Map business models of health startups in Africa
Problem Solving and Strategy Development
- Break down complex problems into structured, actionable work-streams.
- Develop hypotheses and model solutions or scenarios.
- Contribute to strategy documents and implementation roadmaps. Example: Design a scale-up strategy for digital health solutions in West Africa.
Client Deliverables and Communication
- Develop compelling and structured reports, presentations, and actionable insights for stakeholders and senior leadership
- Translate data into clear, compelling insights.
- Support client workshops or stakeholder engagements. Example: Create a stakeholder landscape infographic or a 5-year investment roadmap.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Support interviews and consultations with partners.
- Take notes and follow up with documentation.
Internal Knowledge Development
- Contribute to internal intellectual property creation.
- Develop toolkits, policy briefs, and sector scans.
- Share insights in internal forums. Example: Build a landscape database of health solutions in Africa.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL)
- Support the implementation of MEL frameworks and tools for the health innovation and entrepreneurship programme components.
- Assist in tracking progress towards key indicators and outcomes.
- Analyze MEL data to inform adaptive programming and continuous learning.
- Contribute to learning agendas and documentation of case studies, lessons learned, and success stories.
- Design and maintain dashboards or data visualizations to track KPIs, monitor progress, and communicate outcomes to internal teams and external stakeholders
Other
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the project supervisor.
Qualifications
Education and Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences, or related fields; Master’s degree preferred.
Required Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a research, analytics, or business strategy role within an international or fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, preferably in a consulting or social impact-focused organization.
- Demonstrate interest in health systems strengthening, health innovation, youth employment, and entrepreneurship.
Skills and Competencies
- Demonstrate strong analytical skills, critical thinking and quantitative thinking
- Proficiency in data analysis software such as Python and R.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills; ability to initiate and complete tasks independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to tailor messaging for diverse stakeholders.
- Rational decision-making skills grounded in data and logical reasoning.
- Flexible, self-motivated team player, comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment.
Advantages
- Fluency in English required; proficiency in French is advantageous.
