The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is a corporate body established under the Statistics Act (2006). It is the principal Government agency responsible for the collection, compilation, analysis, publication and dissemination of official statistical information and its custody. It also oversees the coordination, supervision and development of programmes within the National Statistical System (NSS).

The KNBS invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions for the 2025 Cohort of Young Statisticians Programme: –

Opportunity Title: Young Statistician

Number of Positions: Ten (10)
Terms of Service: Temporary (12 months)

Job Purpose:

A Young Statistician at this level will work under Supervisors and Mentors to guide him/her in the performance of duties and responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Learning and improving on statistical programming skills including as R and Python to enhance production of statistical data;
  2. Assisting in the development of statistical and machine learning models in support of various domains of statistics;
  3. Participating in the development of new approaches of getting insights and managing data within various real-time and open-source data, such as social media, incident tracking databases, geospatial data, etc;
  4. Working in collaboration with stakeholders on projects to develop applications to address emerging areas of official statistics
  5. Performing other related duties as may be assigned.

Requirements for Appointment

  1. Must be a Kenyan citizen;
  2. Must have attained a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geospatial/ Geographic Information Systems or related qualifications from a recognized institution;
  3. Proficiency in using R or Python programming languages ;

The opportunities are in four categories namely: Software Engineering, Data Science, Data Management and Geospatial Technology.

Added Advantage

Applicants with the following additional qualifications will have an added advantage:

i. For Software Engineering Category

  1. Full Stack Development experience with focus on Web Applications / Web Development;
  2. Front-End Development expertise:
    1. HTML
    2. JavaScript and/or TypeScript
  3. Experience with at least one of the following frameworks/libraries:
    1. NextJS
    2. D3JS
    3. ThreeJS

ii. For Data Science Category

  1. Proficiency in artificial intelligent (AI) and Machine Learning
  2. Experience with data manipulation and analysis libraries:
    • Pandas
    • NumPy
    • Scikit-learn
  3. Proficiency in SQL for data querying and manipulation
  4. Experience with at least one of the following data visualization tools:
    • Matplotlib
    • Seaborn
    • Plotly

iii. For Data Management Category

  1. Proficiency in data management;
  2. Experience with at least two of the following database systems:
    • PostgreSQL
    • MySQL
    • Microsoft SQL Server
  3. Familiarity with data management tools:
    • Database administration tools
    • Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) tools
    • Data quality tools

iv. For Geospatial Technology Category

  1. Familiarity with Geographical Information System (GIS) and remote sensing tools to generate data specific to a location or geography;
  2. Familiarity with QGIS software;
  3. Experience in geospatial programming using Python programming language;

 

Successful candidates shall be required to obtain the following:

  1. Register with Social Health Authority (SHA) for the duration of the programme;
  2. Register with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF);
  3. A valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation;
  4. Register with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
