Are you a student looking to gain valuable federal experience while pursuing your education? The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is offering an exciting Student Trainee position for individuals enrolled in accredited educational institutions. In this role, you will contribute to the mission of FEMA by working within a major organizational entity, performing routine clerical assignments, and supporting various career concentrations such as Administrative Support, Financial Management, Information & Arts (Public Affairs), and Legal Support.

Open to

  • Students: Current students enrolled in accredited educational institutions from high school to graduate level, including internships, pathways, and other student programs.
  • The public: U.S. Citizens, Nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S.

Clarification from the agency: This opportunity is open to U.S. Citizens who are students enrolled on at least a half-time basis, seeking a degree in a qualifying educational institution, and meeting specific academic requirements.

Duties

This temporary position lasts up to 12 weeks or until 09/21/2024, whichever comes first. While not remote, telework may be authorized at the manager’s discretion. As a Student Trainee, your responsibilities may include:

  • Establishing and maintaining office files.
  • Receiving incoming calls and visitors.
  • Providing callers and visitors with general information.
  • Preparing standardized documents from rough drafts or oral instructions.
  • Processing and distributing mail to appropriate individuals.
  • Developing documents using various office automation applications.
  • Performing special projects.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

To ensure the accomplishment of their mission, DHS requires selected applicants to undergo and maintain a background investigation for a Public Trust. Key requirements include:

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation.
  • Selective Service registration.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government credit card.

Qualifications

To qualify for this Pathways Internship, students must have completed several academic years post-high school. The specific requirements are outlined for each grade level (GS-03, GS-04, GS-05). Eligible candidates must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis for Spring 2024.

Education

Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited high school, college, or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate on at least a half-time basis. Various educational institutions are considered, including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and technical or vocational schools.
