The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

This position is located in Governance Affairs Office in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at the Nairobi duty Station. Under the direct supervision of the Liaison Officer, Governing Bodies Unit, Governance Affairs Office, the intern will support the Office which serves as the technical secretariat for the United Nations Environment Assembly and its subsidiary organs. In this context, the Office seeks energetic and motivated interns to support its work in the following areas, as assigned:

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assist in the drafting of procedural documents (agendas, scripts, transmittal notes, invites, reminders, summary notes, minutes, talking points, cover notes, briefing notes, and others) in preparation for meetings with Member States and undertake other preparatory tasks.
2. Attend and summarize discussions held in meetings through high-level skill of notetaking.
3. Assist with logistics during meetings, ensuring that conference services are fully in place, interactive presentations are well conducted, and meeting platforms are fully functional.
4. Conduct research on intergovernmental procedures and practices of the Environment Assembly and its subsidiary organs.
5. Support the day-to-day management of internal databases.
6. Support the review of accreditation requests by non-governmental organizations, as applicable.
7. Perform other duties, as required.

Qualifications/special skills

1. Have knowledge or at least one official UN language beyond required English (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish)
2. Have knowledge and/or skills in data management, modeling, mining, or statistical analysis.
3. Have knowledge of note-taking skills.
4. Have knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Additional Information

Have undergraduate studies in international relations, political science, environmental issues, law, philosophy, or a related area; and

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) OR
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); OR
c. Have graduated with a university degree
