We are seeking to recruit a Livestock Officer responsible for efficient and effective day to day livestock operations.
Position: Livestock Officer
Type: Permanent.
Reports to: Senior Livestock Officer
Department: Livestock and Agriculture.
Location: Kenya.
Closing Date: Thursday, 5th October 2023.
Position Overview
Livestock Officer updates all cattle movements, cattle counts/physical tallies, and general labor work allocations and supervision of duties issued in accordance with the company’s policies and procedures. As well as effective streamlining of herder movements and spray races. Plans for effective grazing movement of the cattle herds.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure continuous accurate physical counts of all cattle and accurate reconciliation at the end of every month.
- Ensure accurate recording and reporting of all births and deaths to tally with cattle returns.
- Ensuring accurate cattle counts during spray races are done.
- Ensure that all herders’ handbooks are up dated at all times.
- To ensure herders maintain proper records of all animals in their assigned herds.
- Ensure transfers of cattle from one herd to another are effected properly and recorded accordingly.
- Ensuring all the herders are aware of the spray day in line with the weekly schedule of work and that they are there at the right time.
- Ensure proper issuing of uniforms to all the staffs and accurate recording of the same.
- Ensure proper distribution of soaps and shoe polish to all staffs.
- Ensuring that all staffs are properly allocated with habitable housing.
- Assist in ensuring that herders and other staff are at their right place/s of work at the right time.
- Organize workflow and ensure employees understand their duties and responsibilities.
- Planning off and leave schedule for herders and general labor.
- Ensure all herds have min 2 herders and in the maternity herds 3 herders at any one time.
- Ensure all livestock is in good health and assist to maintain production and reduce mortality with good practices.
- Ensure that spray races are run efficiently.
- Participate as a vital team member, and contribute towards the success of the organization, which may involve the provision of other technical and administrative support, as required.
- Ensure consistent and fair application of the progressive disciplinary policy, as necessary.
- Passing on information from the management to the employees regarding employee’s issues and vice versa.
- Responsible for distribution of employee welfare items like Rations.
- Reports any hitches or problems noticed while carrying out assigned duties to the Senior Livestock officer.
- Adheres and ensures staff complies with the health and safety legal standards on the workplace as provided by the Act.
- Ensures proper usage of the personal protective equipment by staff at all times while undertaking duties.
- Adheres and ensures staff complies with the company rules and regulations while maintaining a high sense of discipline.
- Handing over all the works and assignments to the supervisor or any other person in charge while leaving for off or leave.
- Carrying out any other duties that may be given at the discretion of the management.
Qualifications and Skills
- Diploma in Business Administration
- At least five years’ experience working in a busy livestock department.
- Team player, bold and capable of working under extreme pressure.
