Payroll Operations Intern

Background

Alongside our core software platform, we are growing an Employer of Record (EOR) business, whereby our Payroll Ops Team provides remote employment, payroll, and compliance services for employees across Africa. That team needs the help of a self-starter with academic area knowledge and an eagerness to hustle and learn how things work at a startup.

Role Overview

This is a 3-6 month internship that will provide valuable hands-on experience in the intricacies of payroll operations, as well as insight into how technology companies prototype and test new value propositions before digitizing and productising them. You will gain hands-on practice cleaning, processing, and analyzing payroll data internally; support EOR sales personnel to run payroll simulations for external clients; and provide general support to clients. You will also collaborate with the Customer Success and Product Teams to help digitize EOR payroll services as part of our evolving software product.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Data Entry and Processing: Accurately enter and maintain payroll data for employees, including new hires, terminations, salary changes, deductions, and timekeeping records.
  • Recordkeeping: Maintain organized and up-to-date payroll records and files, ensuring confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
  • Assistance with Payroll Inquiries: Respond to employee inquiries related to payroll, benefits, and timekeeping in a timely and professional manner.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with the Customer Success team and finance team to ensure seamless integration of payroll data with other business functions.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Completing a degree in HR, Finance, Accounting, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Data Analysis and Excel Proficiency (formulas, functions, pivot tables, and charts)
  • Meticulous attention to accuracy and detail
  • Ability to identify issues, troubleshoot problems, and propose practical solutions.
  • Trustworthy maintaining professional confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Highly organized and capable of hitting deadlines under pressure
  • Willingness to collaborate with cross-functional teams and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and proactive in taking on new tasks and learning opportunities.

Deliverables, Management & Learning Plan

  • Communication Support: You will learn to independently respond to client inquiries related to payroll with professionalism and accuracy, providing necessary assistance.
  • Payroll Processes: Gain an in-depth understanding of end-to-end payroll processes, including data entry, calculations, tax withholdings, and compliance.
  • Excel Proficiency: Enhance Excel skills by mastering advanced functions, pivot tables, and data visualization techniques for efficient data analysis.
  • Collaboration: Learn cross-functional collaboration with HR and Finance Teams.
  • Feedback and Guidance: Regular feedback sessions will be held to review performance, discuss challenges, and provide guidance for improvement.
  • Task Prioritization: Collaborate to prioritize tasks based on deadlines and importance.
  • Team Integration: Actively participate in Team, Departmental and Company meetings and contribute to discussions and problem-solving efforts.
