Duties &  Responsibilities

  • To lead and perform welding activities for shipbuilding projects & provide welding assistance for ship repair projects.
  • Development and evaluation of welding procedures for both steel and aluminium shipbuilding and ship repair projects.
  • Liaise with internal departments (Production, QC/QA, etc.) to enforce and maintain welding process control.
  • Review drawings and ensure correctness before the start of fabrication and welding.
  • Training people in reading drawings, marking, welding techniques, and shipbuilding standards, thereby developing local skills.
  • Execute MIG and TIG weld for steel, aluminium and stainless steel components based on the drawings, welding schedule or specifications.
  • Work with supervisors and foremen on the projects to task plan efficient, and productive welding activities.
  • Provide welding engineering guidance and support structural and piping areas for shipbuilding projects.
  • Ensure work is done safely and meets the HSE standards of the company.
  • Estimate requirements for manpower, duration, tools and consumables for welding activities.
  • Assist manager planning to prepare construction schedule for the shipbuilding projects.
  • Organizing meetings and training sessions as and when the need arises including mentorship of junior welders.
  • Identify bottlenecks and troubleshoot technical issues arising during construction in consultation with the construction engineer and technical manager.
  • Capture the changes during construction and report to the design department.
  • Plan daily production activities, consumable requirements and manpower.
  • Lead the welding team to make sure targets are met & report back daily progress to the project supervisor/ project manager.
  • Report any deficiencies in drawings, materials, and labour consumables which stop the production progress.
  • Asses the overtime requirement and request accordingly to meet the projection schedule.
  • Coordinate with other departments to avoid any clash of activities.
  • Plan for material in advance and follow up with coordinators for the material.
  • Ensure overall production quality is maintained as per IACS standards.
  • Implement innovative methods and techniques in welding and production activities.
  • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the team and take necessary corrective actions to improve.
  • Ensure housekeeping is followed at the worksite
  • Prepare welding methodology in consultation with the technical Manager/GM shipyard for new builds.
  • Overall maintenance of welding machines
  • Ensure correct spares and consumables are available for the machines
  • Ensure X-rays and Other NDT standards are met.

Requirements

  • Diploma / ITI
  • More than 10 years of welding experience in shipbuilding & ship repair.
  • Hands-on experience in executing welding and fabrication activities for both
  • steel and aluminium hulls as well as outfitting on the shop floor.
  • Certified by AWS/IACS Members for SMAW, FCAW, SAW, GTAW and Aluminum
  • welding.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations and practices in the shipbuilding industry
  • Knowledge in ship construction in both Steel and aluminium
  • Communication Skills in English both reading and writing
  • Experience as a welder Foreman in reputed shipyards.
  • Ability to lead a team independently from the start to completion of the project
  • Knowledge and proficiency in MS Office products
