The role: 

The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED material is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support the work of practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.

ACLED is recruiting an Editorial Officer to review and revise the organization’s written content prior to publication. This can be either a part-time or full-time position (please indicate your preference, if any, and availability in your cover letter). It is fully remote and can be done from any location with reliable internet service. The start date for this position is immediate. This position reports to the Head of Communications. 

Specific roles and responsibilities:

  1. Review and revise ACLED written material prior to publication (e.g. short briefs, infographics, in-depth reports, press releases, etc.)
    1. Help authors articulate clear, data-driven arguments
    2. Identify claims that require further evidentiary support or elaboration and work with authors to improve
    3. Line edit to enhance the quality and readability of prose
    4. Proofread to remove errors and to ensure text conforms to ACLED style and formatting guidelines
    5. Fact-check information from external sources as necessary
  2. Provide in-depth writing support for authors developing new pieces as necessary
  3. Liaise with the Communications team to prepare finalized pieces for publication
  4. Coordinate with Communications team to expand ACLED style and formatting guidelines as necessary
  5. Perform other ad hoc support, administrative, and communications tasks as required

Skills and competencies:

  • Fluency in English (essential); fluency in other languages — especially French, Arabic, or Spanish (preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good judgment and extremely high attention to detail
  • Ability to work remotely and meet deadlines with limited supervision
  • Experience working in a fast-paced and multicultural office (preferred)
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • A bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, international relations, or a related field (preferred)
  • 2-3 years of experience in journalism, publications, communications, or a related field (experience at a non-profit is a plus)
  • Experience working in peacebuilding, conflict, human rights, and/or global affairs (strongly preferred)
  • Familiarity with data science or quantitative research and analysis (strongly preferred)
  • Familiarity with ACLED methodology and analysis (preferred)
