The Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya is looking for an enthusiastic economic support officer who will join the trade and investment team to provide general support to the team.
The Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya focusses on enhancing trade and investment opportunities and partnerships in Kenya, particularly in the following sectors: I) Logistics 2) Health 3) Agribusiness 4) Water and 5) Energy Transition. The Economic Affairs Department comprises of the following clusters: Trade and Investment; Agriculture; and Food Security, Water & Climate, all working under the guidance of the Head of Trade and Development and the Ambassador.
You will become an integral part of the Trade and Investment team and support on day-to-day tasks aimed at strengthening the position of the Netherlands as a strong trade partner to Kenya. Broadly, these would entail events management; communication; record keeping; budgeting; and support to business enquiries.
To this end, it will be important to be a flexible team-player who is capable of quickly providing support on various issues. You have strong organizational skills, working on improving internal processes and organizing external events. You understand economic policy and can support NL businesses where necessary, with support of your team. You will work closely with the Trade & Investment, Agriculture, Food Security & Water and Climate teams as well as and the Assistant Pool.
About the Embassy of Netherlands:
The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nairobi is, besides Kenya, also accredited in Somalia and the Seychelles. In addition, the Ambassador is the Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat, headquartered in Nairobi. The embassy is an organization that consists of 60 employees, both Kenyan and Dutch nationals, including attachés from several ministries in the Netherlands. The Embassy works on trade, economic development, development cooperation, security, political, consular, humanitarian and general affairs. The Embassy has a regional role with regards to climate and migration.

Inclusivity, sustainability and digitalization are central to this relationship to contribute to the leave no one behind agenda in Kenya. Development can only be maintained and succeed when stability and democracy are realized and strengthened. Building upon those principles, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya has recently developed its Strategic Plan for the period 2023 2027. Under this strategic plan, a further strengthening of the involvement of the Netherlands private sector in agribusiness, logistics, energy, water and health care is foreseen.
Key Roles & Responsibilities:
- Prepare for and help organize incoming and outgoing trade missions, official visits, seminars and conferences, workshops and fair activities, networking events and other activities in consultation with Event Liaison Officer and Assistant Pool.
- Actively collect and collate information within the Embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other Dutch government agencies. Ensure internal information sites are well structured, overviews of investment portfolios and fiches and that information is up to date. This includes the embassy’s shared working space and its archive.
- Assist in handling trade requests and enquiries by Dutch enterprises and assist in identifying and reporting on trends, developments and market opportunities in Kenya.
- Manage the organization and structure of the Economic Affairs mailbox, ensure timely communication and archiving of relevant correspondence.
- Support the team in ensuring correct and regular use of the worldwide business services registration system (Achilles) and do the entries for events and missions.
- Maintain the Trade & Investment network, make appointments with relevant parties and responsible for regular updates, organization and maintenance of the contact database (CRM).
- Support the communication team in keeping Embassy LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter accounts and the website up to date.
- Support the team on drafting budgets and keeping track of expenses.
- Management of Trade and Investment team’s branding and other materials.
Key Result Areas:
- Adequate support through effective use of internal systems (Achilles, CRM, 247 and Sophia).
- Work processes and information assets of the Trade & Investment team are well structured.
- Successful organization of events and trade missions.
- Business is informed quickly and satisfactorily as to questions concerning trade and investment opportunities.
- The trade and investment team is visible at events and online through LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Level of education: Relevant qualification of at least Diploma level.
- Level of experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience required in below mentioned skills;
Required Knowledge and areas of experience:
- General knowledge and understanding of economic affairs.
- Ability to support Dutch enterprises to do business in Kenya.
- Good verbal and written command of English language. Good understanding of Swahili and/or Dutch is an advantage.
