THE ROLE:
What this role is responsible for
The gender coordinator is expected to work with other members of CABI’s gender team, to embed gender firmly across CABI’s projects and programmes, with a main focus on the Africa Region. They will engage in and support gender mainstreaming by working with biological and social science staff to embed gender responsive and transformative approaches and gender research in proposals, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting. S/he will lead the development of work where gender related objectives and gender transformation are the primary purpose. The gender coordinator will be expected to stay abreast of current developments in the gender field, develop linkages and partnerships with external expertise and provide training and seminars to support staff in gender skills.
Key accountabilities
- Lead /contribute to projects where gender is a component of the work through implementation of gender approaches and gender research
- Carry out and provide tools and guiding questions to other staff to carry out gender context analysis at project start or before
- Review and provide gender advice on project development, implementation and reporting primarily in Africa, but supporting across the organisation, with a particular focus on gender equity and women’s empowerment.
- Refine and develop gender analysis and support tools to use during project implementation
- Develop and maintain a gender knowledge base for gender mainstreaming good practice in relevant technical areas for dissemination to staff for professional development
- Maintain awareness and knowledge of latest developments in fields of gender, women’s empowerment and youth engagement in agriculture and the environment
- Carry out staff training and capacity building, as required, in gender and women’s empowerment
- Represent CABI and promote our experience in gendered work through publications and conference attendance
- Any other duties as required
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Excellent understanding of gender issues across a variety of cultures and contexts
- Experience in women’s economic empowerment approaches
- Good ability to identify, obtain and analyse information from a variety of sources
- Good ability to facilitate learning and professional development in others
- Good organisational and research skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience in integrating gender into projects and programme design and implementation, monitoring and reporting
- Experience in design and use of gender tools and toolkits
- Knowledge and experience of implementation of gender analyses and assessments
- Knowledge and experience of implementation of women’s economic empowerment tools and research
- Experience in business development targeting women, youth and vulnerable groups
- Knowledge of the gender context and experience in women’s empowerment in across Africa
- Minimum 7 years work experience in related fields (gender) including and not limited to International Development, program and business development.
- Ability to work collaboratively within varied teams
- Ability to work independently and flexibly
- Ability to manage work load and meet deadlines
- Ability to work well in a multicultural environment
- Ability to travel on a frequent basis to CABI projects and programmes
Education & Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher education in social sciences, gender, rural sociology, anthropology from reputable or internationally recognized university.
