About Uthabiti Africa

Uthabiti Africa is the Nairobi-based African non-profit that exists to accelerate quality affordable Childcare in Africa. We create partnerships with governments and key resource organizations to catalyze systemic change in the childcare ecosystem.  Uthabiti works at national and county level in Kenya and is expanding its work to other countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. Uthabiti’s work spans childcare policy and regulatory reform; strengthening the status of female childcare givers; maternal and child health and knowledge and learning. The Collaborative action for Childcare is our initiative for expanding collective action on childcare across Africa.

We are seeking three Interns to support our work across counties and at national and regional level, with a key focus on creating an enabling environment for childcare workers and children under 8 to thrive.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Conducting research that advances the childcare agenda in Kenya and internationally 
  • Supporting Governments to develop and implement policies, regulations, and guidelines to improve childcare ecosystem governance, in collaboration with government and non-government stakeholders. 
  • Promoting advancing the Collaborative Action for Childcare as a mechanism for bringing state and non-state actors together, and support coordination efforts in the sector. 
  • Advancing the rights of childcare domestic childcare workers and childcare micro-enterpreneurs
  • Amplifying the needs of marginalized and disabled children and their caregivers, and collaboratively produce position papers and policy briefs on key issues to advance the agenda. 
  • Build on our experience in engaging with World Bank, ECDAN and Oxfam in international advocacy by engaging with the EAC, the AU, and SADC on regional childcare policies.
  • Support the scaling up of childcare policy and regulatory reforms in Kenya and in other countries
  • Develop and maintain key relationships with key government institutions in Kenya 
  • Strengthen the co-production of policy briefs, position papers, and research reports. 
  • Ensuring the production of regular publications on policy and regulatory environments in Kenya including reports, policy briefs, fact sheets 
  • Ensuring the dissemination of Policy and regulatory outputs to stakeholders both state and non-state actors through learning networks, policy dialogues and the Collaborative Action for Childcare convenings 
  • Maintaining a fundraising pipeline and keep the Regional Programme Director informed on the upcoming fundraising deadlines relevant to the advancement and scaling of the policy and regulatory work in Kenya and the region. 
  • Any other tasks as may be assigned from time to time.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelors’ or Master’s degree in Law or human rights or international development or related field is required.
  • Interest in women’s rights 
  • Excellent demonstrable written and oral skills
  • Some experience working in a multicultural environment, preferably with children, women and policy makers
  • Interest in working on childcare and women’s empowerment
  • Excellent English written and verbal skills; experience in leading the development of proposals, policy briefs and program content
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines; 
  • Ability to critically analyze and provide constructive recommendations;  
  • Good team player with ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues and to motivate and manage high performance teams; 
  • A high degree of diplomacy and tact;
