About Monitoring Learning and Evaluation (MLE) Team
The MLE team embodies the evidence-based nature of Evidence Action’s work and enables the organization to be a data-driven organization. The team broadly comprises of two units; Strategy and Delivery unit. The team provides services across Evidence Action Africa region in meeting the following outcomes:
- Ensure all ongoing program monitoring needs are met (including M&E design and quality data collection).
- Programs have access to timely and useful data for day-to-day programmatic planning and decision making.
- Analysis and research is conducted to support in program improvements (including operation research, monitoring research and cost-efficiency analysis).
- Support with timely, useful and clear information for evidence-based decision making (including provide support to connect the dots).
- Support regional leadership in designing new programs and partnerships for exploration and evaluation.
- Ensure standards, systems and processes are setup for delivery of all functions (monitoring, analysis, research, information systems and quality data).
Job purpose
- An intern with Data Learning, MLE directly supports the evidence-driven work that Evidence Action does. Concisely, the holder of this position will work primarily with the Associate, DL to support the key departmental drive of translating analytical output into reports, visuals and dashboards customized for various audiences such as program staff, donors and management. He / She will also take part in reporting findings in various in-house meetings, both in-person and virtually.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Create periodic high quality written and visual reports and presentations for program teams and donor reporting.
- The position holder will be primarily charged with supporting the reporting function for the Deworm the World Initiative.
- Translate analytical output into useful insights for decision making.
- Provide support during trainings and mentorships of MLE field teams, in preparation for the routine bi-monthly report disseminations with programs.
- Explore new and innovative analytical and visualization tools and avenues to showcase MLE work.
- Routinely attend meetings within MLE and across various programs as required.
- Support in the writing of a quarterly MLE newsletter.
- Identify innovative methods or tools for conducting MLE work & pilot these innovations.
Key performance Indicators
- Timely report development and disseminations to program.
- Periodic delivery of analytical output in new areas/with new tools.
- Fluency in articulation of findings both orally and in written form through reports, visuals.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor Degree in Data analytics, Statistics, Data Journalism, Maths or Economics
- Experience in developing reports and presentations from data analysis output/ transforming data into insight (we are looking for an exceptional report writer).
- Abilities: Excellent report writing skills, ability to work with large amounts of information and see the ‘bigger picture’; critical thinking: ability to look at number, trends and data and come to new conclusion based on findings, excellent writing skills; creativity or passion for design.
- Specialized knowledge: Working knowledge of at least one data and image visualization software – Tableau/PowerBI, Piktochart, Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or GIMP.
- Essential skills: Ability to work with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
- Characteristics: Pro-active; Strong communication skills; Creative/Thinking out of the box, Eye for detail and Love for data.
- Must be confident when making presentations to a large audience and facilitating meetings.
- Proven experience in data analytics or data visualization.
- Proven ability to work with tight timelines.
Intern, Program Data Analysis and Program Data Management
Intern Position Overview
- The interns will be members of the Delivery Unit supporting the Program Data Analysis team. The person must be systematic and loves working with big data. S/he will work closely with other MLE teams to ensure data is processed as per the standard operating procedures while adhering to set the timeline. This position will be based in Nairobi
Roles and Responsibilities
The Intern Analyst will work on the following tasks:
- Assist in QA/QC of Data and dashboard. This will include running a do-file to check the quality of data, and troubleshoot any data errors, e.g missing observations, fewer samples, outlies
- Check Completeness of Data: The intern will check if the data submitted for analysis is complete and of needed quality before it is used for analysis. He/she will liaise with the data management team to ensure all data is clean and accurate for analysis
- Consolidate previous data sets: Under the guidance of the Associate, Data analysis, the intern will develop scripts to merge and/or append previous data sets into one consolidated data collected to e analysis:
- Conduct analysis on one-off tasks: These include important but not-so-urgent analysis, such as analysis of pilots’ analysis, Water source type and baseline water quality.
- Secondary data as needed: The intern will search download and manage any secondary data that might be of interest to
- Mapping: Under the guidance of the intern will, develop maps in ArcGIS/QGIS/R to geographically represent program information.
- Excel Visual: The intern will develop an automated dashboard in Excel and other software as guided by the senior associate. The Visual will be shared with the program team to improve access and usability of data.
- Any other tasks as assigned by the supervisor
Requirements
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, statistics or another quantitative field.
- Knowledge of statistical software packages such as Stata, R, SPSS, SAS etc.
- Strong Data management and analysis skills
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills to work effectively with a team that is geographically dispersed
- Self-directed/self-motivating personality, with the ability to adhere to program deadlines and priorities
- Strong critical and analytical thinking skills
- Familiarity with geospatial analysis in ArcGIS/QGIS and mobile phone surveys will be an added advantage
- Intellectual flexibility and willingness to form and adjust opinions based on evidence
- Have a strong commitment to evidence-based practice and data management as well as analysis skills
- Be enthusiastic to develop personally and professionally as part of a growing team
- Possess a strong attention to detail and a genuine love of working with data
