NOTE: This is a locum position and not a full-time role. You will work when called upon based on the medical evacuation needs. Appointment for this position is for one year and may be subject to extension based on your availability to perform locum duties.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES MAIN TASKS EXTEND OF DISCRETION
Managing Emergency Call Center
• Operate the 24-hour Control Centre by receiving phone calls, attending to emergency emails, and communicating as required using all other modes of modern communication available, including radio communication.
• Promptly relay important messages to the
relevant parties for the purpose of providing optimal patient care. Consultation /Confirmation with Aeromedical Coordinator
• Maintain contact with patients, families, referring facility staff, and safety personnel during and after contact to provide continuous loop closure and information sharing.
• Communicate effectively with outside institutions/agencies, including hospitals, EMS, and other operators for efficient medical service delivery.
Patient Records Keeping and Communication
• Ensure that all patient information and correspondence are written and filled in the relevant data files.
• Dispatch the team for medical evacuation assignments.
• Maintain and process complete and accurate patient records. Consultation /Confirmation with Aeromedical Coordinator
Medical Evacuations (Pre-Flight)
• Receive, attend to, and assemble emergency evacuation requests, and inform the first on-call nurse about the request.
• Keeping patients’ evacuation files safely and in confidential manner.
• Arranging and confirming that all equipment taken are in good working condition.
• Loading the equipment and securing them safely into the aircraft.
• Ensuring that professional standards are upheld when handling medical evacuation requests both on phone and on the ground. Consultation /Confirmation with Aeromedical Coordinator
Medical Escorts
• Escorting patients on commercial airlines.
• The Flight Nurse ensures patient safety and continuity of medical care.
• Handing over the patient to the receiving facility, guardian, or family member. Consultation /Confirmation with Aeromedical Coordinator
Medical Evacuation (In- Flight)
• Accompany Air Ambulance flights in Eastern Africa, continentally and intercontinental with and without a flight physician on a 24-hour duty roster.
• Transferring the patient onto the aircraft stretcher, secure safely, and then load into the air ambulance.
• Ensuring safety transportation of patients from evacuation site to the receiving hospital
• Providing appropriate critical intervention, and efficiently preparing the patient for transport (via ground or airplane) from hospitals or accident scenes.
• Fluidly evaluating changes in the status of patients and demonstrate a proactive approach to solving patient and family problems.
• Liaising with control Room, updates them on the medical condition and vital signs of the patient, and relay the estimated time of arrival (ETA Consultation /Confirmation with Aeromedical Coordinator
Medical Evacuation (Post-Flight) • Ensuring all the equipment used to immobilize and stabilize the patient are all recovered and taken back to the base.
• Handling and assembling all medical equipment needed for medical evacuations and proper storage after use.
• Completing medical evacuation missions initiated within the timeframe of his / her shift, understanding that completion of these missions might require working beyond normal work hour.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
4.1 Education
• Higher National Diploma in Intensive Care Nursing.
• Bachelors of Science in Nursing added advantage
• Current certifications in: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) with experience in Pre-hospital emergency patient care.
• Proficiency in computer studies (word, excel, power point, CRM system, outlook).
4.2 Preferred Experience and Knowledge
• 4 years’ experience as a Nurse with 2 years’ experience in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
• Be a Kenyan Registered Nurse or its equivalent patient care
• Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and maintain validity of the practice license from the Nursing Council of Kenya
• Critical Care transport experience (ground or air) as an added advantage
• Advanced Trauma / Burn Provider training courses completed (ATCN, ATLS, TPATC, ABLS)
• Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) certification
• Teaching experience and / or Instructor status in a healthcare related certification added advantage
