The Young Ambassadors Program (YAP) is a national initiative for graduating high school seniors that uses the Smithsonian Institution’s resources to develop the next generation of Latino leaders in the arts, sciences, and humanities who are concerned about their communities. The Young Adult Program (YAP) encourages individuals to examine different academic and career prospects through the lens of the Hispanic experience. It also provides leadership training. Ford Motor Company Fund has provided significant and ongoing support for this initiative over the past thirteen years.

Students are chosen to travel to Washington, D.C. for a weeklong course at the Smithsonian that focuses on the arts, sciences, and humanities as they relate to Latino communities and cultures. This enrichment program exposes adolescents to a wide range of academic subjects, supporting higher education and fostering the research and appreciation of Hispanic history and identity. It also provides leadership development and skill-building training.

The Washington Week program includes trips to the Smithsonian’s Latino collections and one-on-one conversations with famous experts from a variety of subjects in addition to museum personnel. After the training session, students take part in a four-week interdisciplinary internship at museums and other cultural organizations, including those connected to the Smithsonian, in 18 cities across the United States and Puerto Rico. With the help of this practical component, students can learn practical skills that they can use in their internship projects.

Extension of the application deadline to April 14, 2023
Please study the YAP program materials listed below before applying, especially the applicant guide, which offers a step-by-step procedure for completing the application.
