Job Purpose
An officer in this position will work under a Senior Officer to provide interpreting and translating services for deaf and hard of hearing stakeholders, staff and clients of NCPWD in a variety of settings
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform a wide variety of Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) interpretation in a variety of settings which includes all NCPWD departments, Board meetings, staff meetings, field trips, workshops, trainings, seminars, conferences, international conferences and events, and other organizational settings when needed.
- Coordinate the development and implementation of a training plan for teaching staff on KSL and provision of the training and regular sensitization to the staff on basic Kenyan sign language skills.
- Obtain and review the material containing the information to be interpreted and conduct research on technical information or complex information to gain an understanding of what will be interpreted.
- Coordinate and participate in the vetting, processing and validation of the potential sign language interpreters.
- Participate in the preparation of the enrolment criteria for the sign language interpreters into the national database.
- Any other duty as may be assigned.
Requirements for Appointment
- Diploma in the following disciplines; Communications, Sociology, Deaf studies, linguistics, or equivalent from a recognized institution;
- Certificate in Computer Application Skills;
- Certification from a recognized interpreter certification body;
- The role requires at least two (2) years of cumulative Sign Language Interpreting experience.
