Laboratory Analyst – Siaya

Job Summary: 

The Laboratory Analyst position requires the staff to coordinate biological specimen collection and preservation including placental tissues obtained during home deliveries, biological sample chain of custody management and quality control related procedures.

Qualifications required

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences (Biology, Molecular Biology and Microbiology) from a recognized institution
  • Good command of written and spoken English, Kiswahili and Dholuo
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in biomedical research
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and use electronic case report form (eCRF) for data collection

Responsibilities and tasks

  • Prepare Laboratory reagent e.g. buffers for placenta preservation
  • Receive/collect and record specimens according to applicable protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Perform placental tissue grossing
  • Process placenta tissues for Haematoxylin and Eosin (H & E) staining
  • Coordinate laboratory related supplies and stock monitoring in the study health facilities
  • Train community interviewers and community health volunteers on biosafety and biosecurity guidelines
  • Develop field/laboratory SOPs

Laboratory Analyst – Kisumu

Qualification Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following disciplines: – Biomedical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Applied Sciences or any other related field from recognized institution
  • Proficient in computer applications
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

The Research scientist responsibilities shall include and not be limited to the following:

  • Participate in the implementation of research projects in designated aspects of laboratory work
  • Participate in fieldwork and laboratory experimental procedures
  • Take part in the organization of the internal scientific seminars
  • Carry out experimental and/or developmental work under the supervision of a Senior Scientist
  • Interpret and validate laboratory results
  • Guiding visiting scientists and students on attachment
  • Ensure chemicals, reagents and consumables are appropriately stored in the laboratory
  • Ensure proper operational procedures and laboratory safety precautions are maintained and adhered to in the laboratory
  • Maintain laboratory QC/QA in the performance of assigned duties
  • Ensure test results obtained are recorded and dispatched in an organized and timely manner
  • Write and present periodic reports
  • Document all problems encountered with samples/equipment and take necessary action
  • Observe GCP/GCLP to ensure quality work is attained
  • Facilitate Proficiency testing and other EQA schemes
  • Provide input during the development of new research protocols or platform validations
  • Support the laboratory in maintaining ISO 15189:2012 accreditation for medical laboratories
  • Any other duty as may be assigned from time to time by immediate supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Applied Statistics/Biostatistics
  • Novice data analysis skills (STATA and or R)
  • Experience in data entry/data

In addition, the applicants must:

  • Be a Kenyan youth below 30 years of age
  • Should have graduated and obtained the relevant final certificate

Please Note:

  • Appointment is for a period of one (1) year non-renewable and is subject to availability of funds.
  • A stipend will be paid but successful candidates will cater for their own transport, accommodation, and upkeep during this period.
  • Interns will be expected to take up a personal accident cover and medical Insurance cover.
  • KEMRI/the project WILL NOT offer employment after the completion of internship.
